美国蓝灯书屋的《当代文库》编辑小组于1998年7月间选出了本世纪一百大英文小说。这份排名书单一公布，即引起举世回响和评论。国内媒体虽也报导了这件消息，可惜的是最多仅列出前十大小说的名单而已，一般读者对全部一百本小说是那些仍未能一窥全貌。笔者在《美国的图书馆》（American Libraries）杂志1998年9月号上看到这份百大小说的名单，乃试着查出其小说作者、书名的中文名称（以一般有中译本且有通俗译名者为优先取用原则，如无中译本，则参考《大英百科全书》、《大美百科全书》及《剑桥百科全书》中之中译名称），并加上作者之国籍及出版年代，胪列於後，以供读者或图书馆参考。百大小说之圈选，争议难免；然而这毕竟是审视本世纪经典小说之一份参考名单。既是英文小说，入选者国籍自以英、美两国占多数，爱尔兰、匈牙利、千里达、印度等皆寥寥充数而已；然不见加拿大、澳洲等较大的英语系国家之作者入选，倒是遗憾之事。百大书单中，以英国航海作家康拉德（Joseph Conrad）入选四本最多；其他如乔伊斯、福克纳、劳伦斯、福斯特、詹姆斯、渥夫各有叁本入选。乔伊斯的《尤里西斯》是第一名，这本书在其他单位选拔的名单（如美国瑞德克里夫出版研习班的「百大英文小说」及纽约公共图书馆圈选的「世纪之书」等）也都名列前茅，文学地位似可盖棺论定。就出版年代而言，出版最早的是1900年的《嘉莉妹妹》和《吉姆爷》；最近的则是1983年的《紫苑草》；1985年以後尚无入选作品，可见文学作品需要经得起时间考验。
本刊前两期曾连载纽约公共图书馆「世纪之书」名单（175种），再对照本期之百大英文小说，本世纪之经典，大约应可尽纳其中矣！
